The Tax Collector’s Office is responsible for the billing and collection of Town property taxes and all related penalty charges. Its mission is to assist in maintaining the fiscal stability of the Town by ensuring the timely collection and recording of all taxes through the diligent application of State Statutes, Town Ordinances, regulations, and other enforcement aids, while assisting the public in understanding the taxation process and procedures and maintaining an effective and cordial relationship with the general public.
The Collector is also responsible for reporting fiscal information to various Town Departments, Boards and Commissions, the State of Connecticut, and the United States Bureau of the Census.

Tax Bill Legal Notice
LEGAL NOTICE TOWN OF CANAAN
Pursuant to Sec. 12-145 of the Connecticut statutes, the undersigned Tax
Collector of the Town of Canaan gives notice that she will be ready to receive Motor Vehicle taxes and the first installment of Real Estate & Personal Property taxes due July 1, 2024 at the Tax Collector’s office in the Canaan Town Hall, 108 Main St, Falls Village, CT on Monday's 9am-12pm & 1-3pm and Wednesday 9am - 12pm. Payments must be received or postmarked by August 1, 2024 to avoid interest.
All taxes remaining unpaid after August 1, 2024 will be charged interest from July 1, 2024 at the rate of 1.5% for each month elapsing from the due date of the delinquent tax to the date of payment, with a minimum interest charge of $2.00. Sec. 12-146
Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the taxpayer of his/her responsibility for the payment of taxes or delinquent charges. Sec. 12-130

Online Payment Information & DMV Releases
There is a service fee for online payments charged by our processing company. Electronic Checks $2.95, Visa Debit Card $3.95 or Credit Card 2.95%
In order to receive a DMV RELEASE payment must be made by CASH, Money Order, Credit or Debit card on our website.
ELECTRONIC CHECKS will NOT be released from DMV for 10 days. All motor vehicle taxes in your name must be paid for release.
Please email the Tax Collector for a DMV release if paid outside of business hours.
